2-José Antonio de Oliveira [595] was born in 1794 in Santa Maria Maior, Chaves, Portugal, died on 6 Sep 1837 in São Frei Pedro Gonçalves, Recife aged 43, and was buried in São Frei Pedro Gonçalves, Recife.

It is said to make this register.

Don Alfonso VI., after recovering Brazil, entitled it a city, and in 1676 constituted it a bishopric. Till 1710, when Recife was still a village, it preserved some splendour, and was still strong enough to oppose its rising and plebeian rival in her attempt to become a villa with a camera. But after the disastrous war of the mascates, it fell to rise no more. The public officers have lately been transferred to Recife, and now all is neglected. The botanical gardens, with the chalybeate spring and the fine avenue of mangoes, once so well known, are abandoned, and the climate threatens to become pestilential. Mr. HENRY GIBSON, an English merchant, now dead, bought much of the land for a mere song, and by draining the soil, soon made it comparatively healthy. If the improvement were carried out, this would be a charming summer residence.

ADMINISTRATION AND REPRESENTATION OF ESTATES.
The Queen's Advocate, upon two despatches from Her Majesty's Minister at Rio and Consul at Pernambuco, regarding the administration of the property of a deceased British subject named Henry Gibson, who died at the latter place on the 3^rd December, 1862, similarly said in 1863: "That Mr. Christie should be instructed that upon the present statement the legal presumtion is, that Henry Gibson, deceased, was domiciled at Pernambuco. There is an unsupported assertion that he was domiciled in England, but all the facts in these papers are against this supposition. That if he died domiciled at Pernambuco, the law of Brazil will govern the question of the validity of his his testament, both as to real and personal property (it would govern it as to real property even if he were domiciled in England), and also the guardianship of his minor children. There is no treaty I believe with Brazil which exempts British subjects from the operation of the general rule of private international law.
"The Consul may be directed to render such assistance as may be in his power to the executors, but not to dispute, as a matter of right, the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Court over the testament of Mr. Gibson.

Seu pai, Sr. Arnaldo Gibson Junior, era funcionário público, Fiscal da Receita Federal; não praticava a religião católica, na qual ele foi batizado, pois era maçom, mas observava princípios cristãos que exigia também dos filhos. Sua mãe, Dona Aline Lemos Gibson, professora, faleceu quando Igara tinha 11 anos de idade. Igara ajudou a criar os irmãozinhos. A avó paterna, que as crianças passaram a chamar de mãe, era evangélica e espírita e não levava as crianças para a igreja. Mesmo assim, Igara ingressou na "Juventude Feminina Católica", na Paróquia do Barro, onde sua família residia. Bacharel em Direito, Thomé dedicou sua vida ao jornalismo e não se pode falar em Thomé Gibson sem associá-lo ao Jornal Pequeno, vespertino recifense do qual foi fundador, proprietário e diretor.

Transcrevo um artigo que relata a sua vida e que foi publicado na Página da Saudade da Revista do Instituto Arqueológico, Histórico e Geográfico de Pernambuco:

"Thomé Gibson, fundador e director do Jornal Pequeno, fallecido a 10 de junho de 1928, deixou, mercê de qualidades que o collocaram sempre entre os homens de bem da cidade, vulto de vanguarda na vida pública do Estado, jornalista de visão larga e espírito ponderado, um nome que vale pelo melhor e maior dos elogios à sua actuação na vida e que irá à posteridade como um dos mais dignificantes e dignos exemplos de honestidade, orientada sempre por um labor fecundo que nunca transgrediu os limites de uma lealdade inquebrantável. Dedicando sua actividade ao jornalismo, Thomé Gibson fundou e defendeu emquanto viveu o Jornal Pequeno, reducto onde acolheu uma plêiade de intelligencias novas e vigorosas que dali sahiram para mais altos remigios com a base sólida dos ensinamentos sadios que elle nunca deixou de dar a quantos se abrigavam a sua sombra acolhedoura, ensinamentos que illustrou sempre com os exemplos mais fortes e mais persuasivos de operosidade, de honradez e de altruísmo. Versado nos assumptos mais interessante à collectividade, observador arguto dos homens e das cousas de sua terra, nunca lhe faltaram isen´ão de animo nem serenidade para tratar os problemas mais complexos ligados ao progresso de Pernambuco. Espírito altamente acolhedor, educado, de maneiras captivantes, foi sempre um homem em quem se encontrava, em todos os momentos, um conselheiro dedicado e um amigo sincero, prompto a attitudes de commovedora bondade que lhe teceram em torno do nomeuma aureola de profunda sympathia. A morte veio surprehendel-o como conseqüência de uma arterio-sclerose generalizada, aos 56 anos de idade, furtando ao jornalismo pernambucano uma de suas figuras mais dedicadas e mais brilhantes. Filho do fallecido Sr. Alfredo Gibson e da sua esposa, d. Francisca Adelaide de Barros Gibson, nasceu o saudoso exctinto a 03 de junho de 1872 e foi registrado com o nome de Thomé Joaquim de Barros Gibson. Ainda acadêmico, antes de receber o titulo de bacharel em Direito pela nossa Faculdade, iniciou Thomé Gibson a sua vida jornalística, entrando para a redação do Jornal do Recife no anno de 1888, de onde so sahiu em 1896. Por esse tempo, ainda trabalhando naquelle orgam, então propriedade do desembargador Sigismundo Gonçalves, fundou com Paulo Arruda, Hersilio de Souza e outros o Pequeno Jornal, cuja publicação suspendeu ao retirar-se do Jornal do Recife, fundando o Jornal Pequeno, ao lado de Julio Falcão. Pouco tempo depois, retirando-se Julio Falcão, permaneceu sosinho à frente da empreza, dedicando-lhe toda sua energia moça e trazendo-a até hoje, victoriosa. Thome Gibson foi um dos mais legítimos republicanos históricos, tendo formado ao lado de Martins Junior, de quem era íntimo, de Annibal Falcão e de Silva Jardim, tomando parte activa no movimento político daquella época, de que se afastou depois para dedicar-se exclusivamente ao joirnalismo. No governo do Sr. Dr. Sergio Loreto, convidado, Thomé Gibson consentiu na indicação de seu nome para uma das cadeiras do Senado estadual, sendo eleito, então, com geral symphatia de todas as classes do Estado. A morte do saudoso jornalista foi serena e teve o conforto de todos os sacramentos da religião catholica, exhalando o ultimo suspiro cercado de seus parentes e amigos íntimos num ambiente de sincera compuncção. Solteiro, o ilustre morto deixou, além de sua veneranda genitora, quatro irmãs: a sra. D. Alice Gibson Amado, esposa do Sr. Senador Gilberto Amado, a sra. D. Maria Gibson Santos, viúva do commandante João Santos, official da armada, e as senhoritas Carmelita e Mathilde Gibson. Após o desenlace, o corpo de Thomé Gibson foi collocado em camara ardente no salão principal da família Medeiros, onde se deu o óbito, sendo então visitado por numerosas pessoas de mais elevado conceito na sociedade pernambucana, amigos e companheiros de trabalho."
Em reportagem do dia 29 de janeiro de 1967, o JORNAL DO COMÉRCIO informa na sua página 36, através de artigo escrito por Eugênio Coimbra Junior: "Chegando aos momentos finais prédio que foi reduto do Jornal Pequeno".

Já o DIÁRIO DE PERNAMBUCO, edição de 26 de setembro de 1965, traz na pagina 11 do segundo caderno, a seguinte manchete: "Tomé Gibson Visto, Há 37 Anos, Por Assis Chateaubriand". Neste artigo, o Diário transcreve um artigo feito por Assis para "O Jornal" do Rio de Janeiro, no qual ele descreve Thomé Gibson, e que vale a pena transcrever:
"Tomé Gibson não gostava da doutrina no jornal. O que o feria, sobretudo, numa pagina impressa, era a informação, a reportagem. Fazia o Jornal Pequeno com o máximo de repórteres e o mínimo de ariculistas. Trabalhei a seu lado, no verdor de sua carreira, quando ele chegava as 7 horas da manhã, no gabinete, organizava os serviços da edição cotidiana, mandava, mandava atacar os fatos que se lhe afiguravam os acontecimentos do dia, e se punha, de colete aberto, à espera dos repórteres, examinando a safra de notícias que cada um traria. Colocava o pince-nez nos olhos, via as notas, uma por uma, espiolhava as mais interessantes e mandava, por eles, organizar o noticiário. Nervoso, apressado - prosseguiu mestre Assis, punha-se a passear pela sala a dar ordens aos noticiaristas e repórteres, urgindo pela maior rapidez das notas de cada um. A todo instante tirava do bolso o relógio e nos mostrava a ampulheta do tempo monotonamente correndo. Entre 11 horas da manhã e 1 hora da tarde, ninguém tinha tempo na redação, para sequer contar até cinco. Ali estava o diretor, que a cada momento fugia da paginação. Tomé Gibson não dava a quem quer que fosse essa tarefa a reclamar, ora que o tempo voava, ora que a oficina estava sem originais, como outras vezes, que não podia fechar as páginas porque não havia composição acabada. E dava ordens, febril, agitado, não admitindo réplica de ninguém, porque - dizia, o tempo era o justo para que só ele pudesse falar. Passada entretanto aquela borrasca, que patrão esplendido, afetivo! Fazia questão de descrever, de narrar: mas se lhe sucedia ter que comentar, o comentário que lhe saia da pena era o menos ferino e o mais tolerante. A palmatória como o florete, não eram as suas armas. Considerava o gênero humano tão imperfeito, que a crítica, se deveria exercê-la, fazia-o de rosário na mão, para perdoar ao seu semelhante a falta pela qual ia chamá-lo a contas."
Sobre o Jornal Pequeno, assim falou o Arcebispo Sebastião Leme: "Quase não temos necessidade de um diário católico no Recife, pois já o possuímos e muito bem feito, no Jornal Pequeno".

Na Câmara Federal, justificando um voto de pesar pela morte de Thomé, o deputado Amauri Medeiros assim se expressou: "Quem quiser acompanhar a vida político social de Pernambuco, nos últimos 28 anos não terá senão que correr os olhos pelas coleções do Jornal Pequeno, porque aí encontrará relatado, dia a dia, tudo quanto ocorreu desde as simples reportagens policiais até os assuntos que mais preocuparam a opinião pública, sem malícias nem paixões".

Na Academia Brasileira de Letras, o imortal Adelmar Tavares, assim afirmou no necrológio de Thomé Gibson: "Uma das penas mais brilhantes do Brasil".

Ainda jovem - aos 19 anos, quando estudante, Thomé fez-se poeta e escreveu o livro Sonetos Inspirados da escola romântica. Nas coleções de 1891 da Gazeta da Tarde, como também em outros jornais e revistas do fim do século, podem-se encontrar alguns destes sonetos.

O Jornal Pequeno foi considerado na época do Thomé como "padrão do jornalismo pernambucano." (DP, 27/09/65).

Thomé Gibson nunca se casou e morreu solteiro, residindo na casa de um de seus auxiliares no Jornal, o sr. Renato Medeiros. Esta família herdou o Jornal Pequeno e o dirigiu após a morte do Thomé. Thomé não deixou descendentes conhecidos, e foi homenageado pela Prefeitura do Recife, dando seu nome a uma rua no bairro do Pina.

Mário foi filho de Barboza e de Evangelina Gibson, esta filha de Francis e Alexandrina.
Seu pai, português de nascimento, faleceu precocemente deixando três filhos pequenos: Mário, Murilo e Oscar. Dono de uma boa situação financeira, Barboza tinha navios rebocadores no porto do Recife e devido às dificuldades inerentes a administração deste tipo de empresa, sua viúva (tia Vanja), não conseguiu manter o negócio da família.
A família sobreviveu aceitando hóspedes em sua residência na rua da Aurora, em Recife.
Apesar das dificuldades enfrentadas, Mário conseguiu o título de bacharel em Direito, aos 19 anos, pela Faculdade de Direito de Recife. Teve como colega de turma, aquele que seria o futuro governador de Pernambuco, Miguel Arraes.
Uma vez formado, Mário decidiu migrar para o Rio de Janeiro, buscando melhores condições profissionais, no que foi acompanhado pelo primo Marcílio (vide biografia) e pelo amigo Abelardo, um estudante de Medicina que - juntamente com sua mãe, moravam como hóspedes de tia Vanja.
Minha mãe (Virgínia Gibson), que freqüentou a pensão de tia Vanja, apesar de ser cerca de 10 anos mais nova que Mário, lembrava-se bem desse tempo, e referia-se ao Mário como uma pessoa de hábitos aristocráticos, muito bonito e extremamente vaidoso. Sério, porém muito simpático. Não foi a toa que no Itamaraty recebeu o apelido de Marquês de Olinda.
Sobre o amigo dele, Abelardo, mamãe dizia que era muito brincalhão e estava sempre "fazendo graças".
No Rio, Mário procurou a ajuda do nosso tio Romeu, também advogado, que o aconselhou a prestar concurso para o Instituto Rio Branco (esta informação me foi prestada pelo próprio Mário). Tio Romeu na época era uma das referências de nossa família. Ligado a Oswaldo Aranha, de quem foi chefe de gabinete, chegou a ocupar a chefia do escritório brasileiro em Londres, que acompanhava a impressão de nossas cédulas pela Thomas de La Rue Companie.
Marcílio ingressou na aeronáutica onde fez uma brilhante carreira.
Abelardo, que abandonou o curso médico, foi trabalhar na Radio Tupi do Rio de Janeiro e tornou-se posteriormente conhecido como Chacrinha. Abelardo também tinha o sobrenome Barboza mas desconheço qualquer vínculo de parentesco para com o pai de Mário.
Em áreas completamente diferentes, os três - Mário, Marcílio e Abelardo, conseguiram muito sucesso nas profissões escolhidas.
Mário era conhecido no Itamaraty como o Marquês de Olinda, por causa de seus hábitos aristocráticos e pelo intenso amor a cidade de Olinda. Mesmo morando em Recife, ele, neto de Francis, tinha orgulho em ser relacionado como um Gibson de Olinda.
Estive com Mário em 1980, no Pamphilli Palace - Roma, quando ele era o nosso embaixador. Já mantinha correspondência com ele, pois em 1975, quando eu estava residindo em Oxford - Inglaterra, ensaiei uma ida à Atenas aproveitando o fato dele ser embaixador na Grécia. Manifestei meu desejo ao primo e ele imediatamente respondeu concordando e incentivando. Pena que não consegui concretizar esta viagem.
Mário também tinha interesse em genealogia, era um pesquisador das nossas origens e cheguei a fornecer a ele alguns dados que tinha sobre os Gibsons. Na época ele me mostrou um tartan da família Buchanans (que é usado também pelos Gibsons escoceses) que teria comprado em uma visita à Escócia com o objetivo de mandar fazer uma saia para Júlia. Neste contato pessoal com ele, que foi o único que tive, ele manifestou a vontade de comprar e manter a casa que pertenceu ao avô Francis, em Olinda.
No Itamaraty ocupou todo os cargos glamorosos do Ministério, o chamado "circuito Elizabeth Arden", sonho de todo diplomata.
Muito mais que um diplomata, Mário foi um estadista, um homem de visão, e deixou uma forte marca pelo seu trabalho, que aqui destaco alguns pontos:
1. A extensão do limite territorial de nossa fronteira marítima para 200 milhas. Enfrentou grandes potências, como os EEUU, a França e o Japão, e de vizinhos, como a Argentina, mas foi graças a este trabalho que o petróleo descoberto nas bacias de Santos, de Campos e outras, pode ser considerado como brasileiro;
2. Mudança do Ministério das Relações Exteriores para Brasília, consolidando ainda mais nossa Capital Federal. Isto obrigou a todas as embaixadas e representações estrangeiras a saírem do Rio para Brasília, hipótese que elas apresentavam resistência;
3. Independência de nossa política externa que era alinhada aos interesses de Portugal e Estados Unidos, voltando-se para os países africanos, sul-americanos e árabes. Brasil começou a ser visto como uma liderança no Terceiro Mundo. Foi o mentor da política da "Diplomacia do Interesse Nacional", conhecida também como "Brasil Potência";
4. Foi o principal ator na implantação do tratado com o Paraguai para a criação da Itaipu Binacional. Além de resolver o problema energético indispensável para o crescimento do Brasil, solucionou uma antiga pendência com o nosso vizinho sobre uma área de fronteira;
5. No plano militar internacional, manteve-se contrário à adesão do Brasil ao tratado de não-proliferação nuclear, incentivando a qualificação tecnológica e construção de uma indústria armamentista nacional.
Mário teve forte influência na solução pacífica do seqüestro do embaixador americano Burke Elbrike, fato que contrariou a opinião de alguns setores das Forças Armadas que desejavam aproveitar-se de um desfecho infeliz e ainda mais, radicalizar a questão política do Brasil.
Teve também forte participação na arrecadação de 1 milhão de dólares, destinado ao pagamento dos tupamaros pela liberdade do embaixador brasileiro que tinha sido seqüestrado por eles. O Governo brasileiro de então recusou-se a negociar com estes guerrilheiros e a solução de Mário foi extra oficial. Independente.
Ao deixar o Ministério, ainda vigorando o Governo Militar, Mário pleiteou o cargo de Governador de Pernambuco (que na época era por indicação), mas sofreu forte resistência não só dos caciques políticos de Pernambuco da época, que alegavam que o mesmo estava ausente de Pernambuco há muitos anos, desconhecendo a realidade do Estado, como também dos próprios militares que o consideravam como de esquerda. Na época os governadores eram nomeados e Mário perdeu a indicação para Eraldo Gueiros.
Se os militares o toleravam e o classificavam de esquerdista, aqueles que sucederam o Governo Militar, revanchistas, o viam como um ex-ministro de Médici, e o taxavam de reacionário. Sem dúvida, isto é o que caracteriza o bom senso, o equilíbrio.
Inegavelmente Mário foi, antes de tudo, um nacionalista.
Avalizado pelo seu livro "Na Diplomacia, o traço todo da vida", disputou uma vaga de imortal na Academia Brasileira de Letras mas antevendo uma derrota para Paulo Coelho, retirou seu nome. Paulo Coelho assumiu a vaga e posteriormente numa clara manifestação de desdém pela Academia, nunca compareceu a nenhuma de suas sessões.
Todos os que os conheceram, citavam como sendo suas características: carismático, inteligente, aristocrático e simples. Informo outra: extremamente católico. Quando ia a Recife, fazia questão de assistir as missas de domingo no Mosteiro de São Bento em Olinda e se negava a receber a comunhão, pois legalmente divorciado e casado, considera-se "em pecado" com a Igreja Católica.
Como brasileiro e como Gibson, digo: "Obrigado, Mário!"

Informei a tradição oral da família mas, como médico, prefiro acreditar que a paralisia de Alice tenha sido em decorrência de poliomielite.

Quanto ao casamento de Alice & Theodomiro, igualmente ao de Elisa & Bento, foi ele complexo em virtude da oposição da família. Eles porem não se intimidaram e também fugiram para casarem-se, no que pese andar ela em cadeira de rodas. Fixaram-se na cidade de Vitória de Santo Antão \endash PE.

Eu sou desses Oliveira... Vi em outra página que se converteram ao cristianismo espontaneamente. Não é verdade.

Até final do século XIX tinham uma comunidade secreta em Cotegipe BA, o que não ocorreria se houvessem se convertido por vontade própria.

Aliás, até contraíram matrimônio com pessoas aparentadas com Antônio José da Silva, o judeu.

José married Maria Conceição de Araújo [855] [MRIN: 188], daughter of Sergeant-mór José Alexandre de Araújo [862] and Magna Antonia Campos [863], on 6 Jul 1821 in Parish of São Frei Pedro Gonçalves, Recife. Maria was born in 1796 in São Frei Pedro Gonçalves, Boa Viagem, Recife, was christened on 8 Feb 1796 in São Frei Pedro Gonçalves, Recife, and died on 7 Aug 1889 in Boa Vista, Recife aged 93. They had 12 children: Alexandrina Roza de, Joaquim (Antonio?) de, José (Antonio?) de, Umbelina Joaquina de, Maria Adelaide de, Joaquina (Eustaquia?) de, Antonio (José?) de, Candida R. de, Francisco Gomes de, Eduardo Candido de, Amalia (Rosa?) de and Hermina Josephina d'.

Onde consta José (Antônio?), a meu ver, devia ser consertado. Trata-se de meu trisavô, José Bento de Oliveira, cujo nome de esposa procuro há longo tempo sem êxito.

Ainda tenho muitas lacunas a preencher, e gostaria de encontrar mais ascendentes de Lucas (ou Lucao) Gonçalves, e esposa.

Outra coisa importante: ele não foi para os EUA, como aparece na página: alguns de seus descendentes nasceram em Angical - BA.

O avô paterno de meu pai nascido em Juiz de Fora Minas Gerais se chamava Honorio Francisco de Paula, filho de Francisco Vicente de Oliveira e Virginia Maria de Paula.
Segundo os irmãos de meu avô, essa linhagem família teria origem alemã ou algo assim, que mudaram o sobrenome ao chegar no Brasil e viviam em segredo e como quem fugia de alguém. Contam eles que meu bisavô não gostava de contar sobre a origem e sobre seus pais, morreu com seus segredos. Uma tia conta que o pai dela, Honorio e seus irmãos não foram registrados no cartório e talvez tivessem somente documentos na igreja. Também conta ela que há uma prima chamada Florinda, é a mais velha da linhagem viva, mas não se tem contato. Talvez tenha algo a mais para contar, quem sabe os segredos da família.
Estranhamente, Honorio e seus irmãos receberam o sobrenome da mãe e não do pai e herdamos ele até hoje; a única que recebeu o sobrenome Oliveira foi essa tia, irmã de meu avô paterno. Esse bisavô não era religioso (do tipo católico), nem meu avô, nem meu pai, até ele (meu pai) se tornar cristão na juventude. Sempre familiares estranhos e fechados para conversa.
Outro lado da família do meu pai já contia endogamias fortes e alguns costumes de enterrar o corpo em manto branco e não consumir carne com sangue, também envolvendo Minas, mas também São Paulo e Santa Catarina.
Até hoje é um mistério essa linha paterna direta.
